80th Birthday Step Card & Tutorial

A very special member of my family turned 80 today.  We celebrated by having High Tea and as she has an elegant sense of style, I tried to make an elegant card for her too.

Here's my step card for her 80th birthday.

I learned how to make a step card years ago from my fellow crafty friend, Michele Winston.  Here are her instructions:
  1. Cut a piece of cardstock 5.5" x 11" to make the base of the card.
  2. On the short side, cut two lines in the cardstock 1" in from each edge. The cuts start 1" down from the top and are 5.5" long, so they finished at 6.5".
  3. On the long side,  score three lines from the edge of the card to the first cut line.  Score at 1", 2" and 6.5". Repeat the same for the other side of the card by scoring the same on the other side. (See first picture below).
  4. Score a line across the centre of the card at 5.5". Score from 1" down to 4.5" - effectively joining the two cut lines.
Your card base should now look like the second picture below.

  5. Fold the two side edges so your 1" score is a mountain fold and your 2" score becomes a valley fold.  Your card should now look like the picture below.

  6. Decorate your card to suit.
Here's a side view of my finished card.

I hope you enjoy making this card.  It's not difficult and does add a bit of interest to your card.

The products used are all Stampin' Up! except for the patterned paper and pearl embellishments which have been in my stash for some time.  Two of the products, the Perfectly Penned sentiment set and Pewter embossing powder are retiring 30 June 2014 and can be found in the Retired List section of my store.  If you're interested in these products you need to get them quick as our new catalogue starts 1 July 2014.

If you're interested in buying any of the products used today, please click on the links below to order them online.  If you'd prefer to attend a class to learn how to make this card, please feel free to contact me as I do run regular card making classes.

2014-15 Catalogue Sneak Peek - Baby Step Block Card

This is the last of my sneak peek cards and is a 3D step block card.  It does fold flat for placing into an envelope for mailing purposes (similar to the card in a box).  It also has space within the box section of the card to hold a gift card for the new baby (or parents).

This step block card features many new catalogue products such as Something for Baby stamp set, Baby's first framelits, Lullaby DSP, Heart punch (from the Itty Bitty Accents punch pack), thick and standard sized baker's twine and the new 2014-16 In-Color, Hello Honey.  The design of the step block card was inspired by US based Stampin' Up! demonstrator, Deb Valder.

Happy Birthday 2014-15 catalogue sneak peek

Do you struggle to make masculine cards?  If you do, then you're going to love the new Maritime Designer Series Paper (DSP) coming out 1 July.  Today's sneak peek features the new Traveler stamp set along with the Maritime DSP and combined, is perfect for masculine cards.

The card also features some current products such as Night of Navy ink, cardstock and candy dots coloured with the silver pen, Real red and Whisper White cardstock along with the Happy Birthday sentiment from the Memorable Moments stamp set.  I've sponged the edges of the DSP with Night of Navy ink too.  The silver compass is a charm I've had in my stash for many years and thought it added a nice finishing touch to the card.

Bon Voyage 2014-15 catalogue sneak peek

I've been making more cards with some of the exciting new catalogue products due for release 1 July 2014.  Today's sneak peek features the new Traveler and Back to Basics alphabet stamp sets and one of the new 2014-16 In-Colors, Lost Lagoon.

The card also features some of the current products which are carrying over into the new catalogue too.  They are the World Map background stamp and Tiny Wave rotary blade (used with the optional rotary addition for our Stampin' Up! trimmer).  I've used the sponging technique to blend the classic ink colours of So Saffron, Marina Mist and Lost Lagoon over the map and sentiment piece.

One of the exciting things about using the new Back to Basics alphabet  stamp set is that it's completely clear as it's made of photopolymer.  It made lining up the letters easy to stamp the sentiment.  I tried to go for a masculine look with this card.  It's a versatile design which could easily be made for another occasion by swapping the 'Bon Voyage' sentiment to e.g. 'Happy Father's Day' or 'Happy Birthday'.  The sentiment strip and world globe have been popped up to provide some dimension to the card and the bakers twine and Early Espresso coloured candy dot adds some texture too.
